Unleash your energy and ignite the dancefloor. That is the tagline AlphaTheta uses to introduce the RMX-IGNITE to new audiences at ADE. These days, having a few DJ decks is not enough for longer sets. People expect gradual effects and sonic storytelling throughout your set, especially when DJing in a genre that often repeats musical patterns.
Kieran Wright-Wilson of AlphaTheta gave visitors an introductory demo of the RMX-IGNITE, a nifty device that sits atop your DJ decks. It allows you to easily remix the live audio you’re hearing, both in sampling and effect overlays. With a link cable to your CDJs or a single USB cable for power and sending info to your mixer, you’re instantly ready to adjust the sound to your heart’s content.
Wright-Wilson demoed the power of the 3-band FX system, where, as with a mixer, it’s easy to filter the high, mid or low range. “We’re able to make the transitions more dynamic, especially when working with [3-band sound systems] like the ARTOS 1000,” he said joyfully. “It gives you an extra layer of engagement between you as a DJ and the dancefloor.”

While many of the functions are also available on a professional mixer or player, they’re now neatly packed into a small, quick-use form with the RMX-IGNITE. The dedicated FX levers, which let you either tap or hold sound effects, work beautifully for rhythmic segments.
The true star of the show is the sample section, which allows you to load in your own samples and play with them on the fly. With an overdub button and four dedicated sample buttons, an artist can stack layers of sound and create soundscapes while mixing. The RMX-IGNITE might be the icing on the cake, but it’s well done and serves its purpose of making monotonous tracks that much more interesting.
